SAPM Spring 06\: Project Administration

1

Task Management

Task management is ‘a temporary practice to produce a one of a kind

product, support, or result' (PMI 2004). Project

managing (PM) tactics were originally developed

for waterfall-type assignments like building construction.

PM HOURS focuses on preparing, scheduling, monitoring, and

manipulating the complex interdependencies among subtasks.

PM techniques are particularly relevant when considering

the complete project by which software development is

stuck, which includes other activities such as

paperwork, training, equipment, etc .

Case in point project

Consider building a backyard

Roof

shed, which involves

building the shed,

Framing

п¬Ѓguring out what materials

Siding

are required, ordering or perhaps

purchasing the materials,

and putting together the

Foundation

parts.

Some of these tasks depend on others, some should be

scheduled, some take labor, etc .

Project management jobs

Need to п¬Ѓgure out:

• What must be done

• What buy they can be done

• The length of time each will require

• How much time the whole project must ingest principle

• How long the complete project is expected to have, given

п¬Ѓnite resources

Function Breakdown Structure

A WBS is a picture showing difficulties subtasks with the

project:

Constructing

Put foundation

Build frame

Set up siding

Set up roof

End (door, etc . )

Guideline: break items down as far as necessary to

estimate and schedule them, with no further.

The essential path may be the longest way through the network

diagram – it is the bare minimum duration of the project if there are infinite resources (so that duties can occur in parallel) and accurate quotes.

Here, everything but adding the siding is around the critical way, and must happen inside the order specified.

Tasks not within the critical path have slack – the duration with which they can be later without making the project later

than the critical route duration.

Below, putting up the siding has one day of slack: eventually

longer than estimated is usually ok, but since it takes for a longer time it will be the modern critical course, and delay the project.

PERT/CPM Graphs

Network layouts come in a number of flavors with

different brands:

A Program Evaluation and Review Technique (PERT)

chart displays dependencies and time estimations, using

3-point estimates.

The Critical Path Method (CPM) chart is a related

option, using single estimates.

Both equally show identical information, but use different methods

intended for calculating the critical course and slack.
